The West Central Florida near Tampa (also called Tampa toll roads) consists of the following expressways, parkways and express lane:

Tampa Expressway Tolls

Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA)[1] is an independent agency of the Florida state that maintains and operates toll facilities of the Tampa Bay region including Lee Roy Selmon Expressway (aka Tampa Expressway). Selmon Expressway toll payment can be done with a valid toll tag (SunPass, E-ZPass, E-Pass etc.) or Toll-by-Plate.

Tampa Toll-by-Plate

Among other toll payment methods (see: How to Pay Toll in Florida), Toll-By-Plate in Tampa[2] is a popular method to pay toll. It is an image-based electronic toll collection system. On Selmon Expressway, a photograph of the license plate of the vehicle is captured to identify the vehicle owner. The owner is then sent a toll invoice which includes toll charges plus 25 cents and an administrative fee.

SR 568 or Veterans Expressway

The section SR 568 of the Veterans Expressway runs between the Suncoast Parkway near Lake Carlton and Dale Mabry Highway (SR 597) at Lutz. This portion of SR 568 was designated as SR 589 earlier until the Suncoast Parkway opened northward to Brooksville.

The Suncoast Parkway extends the State Road 589 north from the Veterans Expressway (SR 568) spur to Dale Mabry Highway (597). It runs through Pascon and Hernando Counties to U.S. 98 northwest of Brooksville. The Suncoast Parkway provides the option of cash toll payment.

SR 570 or Polk Parkway

The Polk Parkway or otherwise known as Florida State Road 570 is operated by Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise system of expressways. This 24-mile toll road runs through Polk County. The turnpike serves as a beltway around Lakeland in the form of a semi-circle and along with the Interstate-4 circles the city limit of Lakeland.

As it is part of the Florida Turnpike network, SunPass, E-Pass and LeeWay are accepted. It also recognises coin collection at toll plazas. Polk Parkway does not use employ road tolling. Tolls on the Polk Parkway are calculated based on the number of axles for your vehicle. Axles are counted with wheels on the ground, including axles on trailers that are being towed.

I-4/Selmon Expressway Connector

The I-4/Selmon Expressway Connector is also known as the Crosstown Connector. The elevated north-south toll road connects Interstate 4, the Selmon Expressway and the Port of Tampa east of Ybor City. The connector is an all-electronic toll road and accepts the SunPass and toll-by-plate for payment of toll. It also has an exclusive truck lane.

Sunshine Skyway

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge, located in Tampa, is a 6.7 km-long bridge built over Tampa Bay. Considered to be the longest cable-stayed concrete bridge in the world, it connects St. Petersburg in Florida to Terra Ceia. Tolls on the Sunshine Skyway are calculated on the basis of the number of axles for your vehicle. Axles are counted with wheels on the ground, including any axles on trailers that are being towed. The Sunshine Skyway has 7 axle designations.

Pinellas Bayway System

The Pinellas Bayway provides connects St. Petersburg, Florida to St. Pete Beach, to finally terminate at the world-famous Don CeSar resort. The toll on the Pinellas Bayway is managed, owned and operated by the Florida DOT. The tolls can be paid by cash, the SunPass or any other Florida-compatible electronic toll collection transponder. Bayway Isle commuters also have two exclusive discount programs in conjunction with SunPass usage.

SR 618A or Reversible Express Lanes

SR 618A (Express Lanes) Reversible Express lanes [5] extend from Channelside in Tampa east to Brandon Parkway by Westfield Brandon Town Center Mall. This three-lane roadway is reversible, flowing westbound during the morning and eastbound during the evening. SR 618A (Express Lanes) Reversible Express Lanes are all-electronic toll roads.

SR 618 or Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway

The Lee Roy Selmon Expressway was originally known as the Southern Crosstown Expressway. This 14-mile expressway connects the South Tampa neighbourhood, near MacDill Air Force to Downtown Tampa and Brandon.

The expressway does not have staffed toll gates. The SunPass is accepted on the expressway. For motorists without the SunPass transponder, tolls could be paid with the “Toll-By-Plate” program, where the license plates are photographed and read. If the license plate number is associated with a Toll-by-Plate account, that account is used to pay the toll. If there is no account, notification of the toll is mailed to the vehicle’s owner, with penalties being imposed after 30 days.
